U.S. Merchant Marine Academy The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, one of the five Federal Academies, was dedicated in 1943 as a federal institution of higher learning operated by the Maritime Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Transportation. The purpose of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy is to ensure that individuals are available to the nation as shipboard officers and as leaders in the transportation field who will meet the challenges of the present and the future. The Regiment of Midshipmen includes some 950 men and women from virtually every state and several foreign nations. The compact student body size ensures close contact between midshipmen and expert faculty as students pursue studies in engineering, marine transportation, mathematics and science, humanities, naval science and physical education. Engineering Department’s Research Vision The USMMA’s Engineering Department participates in the exploration of maritime energy and environmental challenges to support the advancement, innovation and enhance the esteem of the Maritime Industry. Further, it provides world class expertise to study cutting edge technology for the improvement of energy sources, conversion and propulsion methods and environmental issues related to the Maritime Industry. The department fosters academic excellence at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy by engaging interested midshipmen, faculty members, government officials, and industry experts in its activities. Research Mission The Engineering Department studies issues related to available and new prime movers for ship powering and propulsion; alternative energy sources and systems for ship powering, propulsion and non-hydrocarbon fuel production as well as alternative hydrocarbon fuels for ship powering and propulsion; technologies and system for reducing air emissions and water pollution. In addition, the department develops relationships with other institutions both domestic and foreign to study global maritime energy and environmental issues, conduct joint research, and arrange scholarly and student exchange programs. Furthermore, the department is a platform for the Kings Point Scholar Program for Midshipmen to acquire applied research skills, broaden their professional views, and interact with faculty members to achieve a more mature understanding of maritime energy and environmental issues to enrich their academic experience.
